Jordan Smith started the third day at the Omega European Masters with high hopes.
He was just five shots behind Matt Wallace, and despite a bogey on the first hole, he managed to stay in contention by making the turn one-under.
But things took a turn for the worse when he got a two-shot penalty on the 12th hole .
Penalty Drama:
Smith’s troubles began when his ball landed outside the relief area after a drop. According to rule 14.2 of golf, he should have dropped it again properly. Instead, he played from where it landed, leading to a two-shot penalty. This mistake turned his double-bogey into a quadruple-bogey eight.
Fans might think this was really unlucky for Smith.
The windy conditions made it tough for everyone that day. Nicolai von Dellingshausen and Eddie Pepperell even putted into the lake at the 12th hole, hurting their chances too.
Despite all this chaos, only three players—Jonas Blixt, Sebastian Soderberg, and Edoardo Molinari—managed to finish under-par. Wallace led with an 11-under score and had a four-shot lead over Alfredo Garcia-Heredia going into the final round. Meanwhile, Smith found himself in T17, nine shots behind Wallace.
