“No Laying Up” was the first to report that a group of PGA Tour players have started a petition. They’re seeking to discuss a variety of issues concerning the Tour. This move has sparked further doubt about the Commissioner, Jay Monahan.

The letter reads, “Dear PGA Tour membership, A group of us are requesting a special meeting. We want to address issues related, but not limited, to FedEx Cup points allocation, the number of limited field signature events, the PIP Program, and PGA Tour leadership.” The players are asking for a significant reduction in FedEx Cup points before the first designated event.

The Player Impact Program’s results have stirred up controversy. Rory McIlroy pocketed the $15 million first prize, which didn’t sit well with some pros. Nate Lashley, for instance, called it “a little ridiculous” that the PGA Tour spent $100m on 20 players. He also said it’s “an absolute kick in the face to the rest of the PGA Tour players.”

The new ‘Signature Events’ have also been a hot topic. Some argue it creates a two-tier system. Lucas Glover, despite participating in these tournaments, stated, “I still think they’re terrible. Glad I’m in them, but it’s terrible. I said that when I wasn’t in them.”

The plan to introduce no-cut, limited-field events to the PGA Tour schedule was controversial from the start. These no-cut tournaments of between 70 to 80 players effectively create a split between the elevated events and standard tournaments.

Joel Schuchmann, a Senior Vice President of Communications at the PGA Tour, responded to the letter. He said, “the Commissioner is always available and willing to meet with a player or players at any time.”

A memo was also sent out from the Player Directors Policy Board, which includes Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, and Adam Scott. The memo addressed speculation around the future of the game and mentioned the progress of negotiations with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
